A counterargument to Brzezinski and the offshore balancers

China's rise is casting a large shadow over the United States. Zbigniew Brzezinski, whose credentials would not suggest he is not a supporter of U.S. power, is now advocating a division of Asia into a Chinese and a U.S. sphere of influence. This sounds prudent in an era dominated by financial crises. But the strategy has fatal pitfalls. The new geostrategic realities in Asia guarantee that an offshore balancing strategy will put U.S. maritime supremacy, and with it U.S. global leadership, in danger.
